Help Give Honey Bees a Chance

Honey Bees Have Been Getting a Lot of Buzz Lately

Have you noticed that bees have been in the news lately? The week of June 21 marked the beginning of National Pollinators Week and organizations working to protect bees have been actively promoting their cause. In addition, the USDA provides $8 million to boost the honey bee population. Bees are important for pollinating over 100 types of crops and make honey which is essential in many foods. As an industry, we are working to create awareness about honey bees.

Where would we be without bees? Without bees, many of your daily meals would be dramatically altered. It is estimated that one out of three bites of food we eat is made responsible because of bees. You wouldn’t have fruit, vegetables, food for grazing animals and therefore all dairy products. It is important to protect bees because they are essential to our sustaining our delicate environment (and they make tasty honey too)!

How can the average person help? A regular person can help by planting flowers in their garden. Planting native flowers encourages pollination. You can ask about bee-friendly flowers when you purchase flowers for your home. In addition, choose organic food because it supports positive farming practices and ecosystems. Be careful when spraying with pesticides because they can harm these delicate pollinators.

When you look out into the environment and notice a beautiful patch of flowers or have your favorite fruit at a summer picnic, take a minute to remember that 85% of plants exist because of bees.
