Is There Such a Thing as Organic Honey?

Now more than ever, consumers are worried about what is getting put into their bodies. Are you eating organic? Are you taking in the wrong nutrients? When it comes to honey, is the stuff you are getting actually organic? Simply put – no. There is no such thing as organic honey. Because bees go all around and take nectar from a myriad of locations, it cannot be guaranteed that any honey is 100% organic.

In a recent test of commercially available honey, 98% of samples were contaminated with pesticides. The most common was miticides, designed to kill mites that are known to harm crops the country depends on for survival. This study was conducted across the United States and also in one Canadian province.

Honey Bees Love to Travel

Did you know a honey bee can travel over five miles for food? In tough times, they can travel up to 10 miles! Because of this, it is nearly impossible for honey to be fully organic and free of pesticides. Even if flowers within five miles of the bees don’t have pesticides on them, the wind can carry these ingredients as well. Think of everything that can be done within a five-mile radius of a hive!

That Honey Probably Isn’t Organic

In a highly-connected world, it is nearly impossible for a company to get their honey ‘certified organic’. It is more likely that the honey you are consuming is “organic-ish.”

Be wary of any honey that claims to be certified organic. This means their honey samples cannot use honey, sugar, antibiotics, or have any pesticides present in the honey. Not only does this require the cooperation of the beekeeper, it requires every single neighbor to also not use these things. There are organic beekeepers but organic honey tends to be much more complex.

The good news is that most experts say what’s most important is to purchase raw honey. This means it is pure, unheated, unpasteurized and unprocessed. Raw honey is the only honey that maintains all of the major health benefits and preserves all of the natural vitamins, enzymes, phytonutrients and other nutritional elements.
